Well… apparently nothing said “Congratulations on the baby!” quite like an ashtray.
This gloriously strange vintage ceramic smoking lady is peak mid-century kitsch. Finished in glossy black with oversized gold-tone hoop earrings, bright red lips and an elaborate sculpted headdress. She features an opening in her mouth for cigarette smoke to rise up from the tray below and imitate smoking. Across the front, in gold script, are the wonderfully baffling words “New Mother.”
Yes. New Mother. On an ashtray.
The piece comes from an era when decorative smoking accessories were everywhere - from cocktail tables to offices and even waiting rooms - and manufacturers turned ashtrays into increasingly elaborate pieces of functional decor. Figural ceramic ashtrays like this became especially popular during the 1950s and 1960s.
Perfect for the collector whose decorating philosophy is “tasteful… but with one object that makes everyone ask questions.”
A little old. A little odd. A Gay Ol’ Time.
