Vintage 1950s Ceramic Pixie Elves - Acrobatic Headstand & Seated Kitsch Pair

$45.00

Some elves make toys. These two apparently joined the circus.

Meet a delightfully ridiculous pair of genuine mid-century ceramic pixies dating to approximately the 1950s. One ruby-red troublemaker has settled into his tiny wire chair with a red-and-white gingham seat, while his chartreuse companion has decided sitting is for amateurs and is performing a full headstand.

The green acrobatic pixie retains a faded red “JAPAN” stamp, confirming its Japanese origin. During the postwar years, Japan became a major producer of colorful ceramic giftware for the American market, and whimsical elves, pixies, animals and figurines became especially popular during the 1950s. Similar acrobatic or “tumbling” pixies were produced in multiple poses and were designed to perch on shelves, pianos and other furniture.

With their exaggerated pointed ears, mischievous faces, glossy jewel-tone glazes and wonderfully bizarre poses, these little characters are pure mid-century kitsch.

Vintage wear and repair consistent with age. See photos for exact condition.

Perfect for a pixie collection, retro Christmas display, MCM decor, maximalist shelf, or anyone whose decorating philosophy is basically “needs more tiny ceramic weirdos.”

A little old. A little odd. A Gay Ol’ Time.
